Verified Purchase. I enjoyed the book even though it was about a dark period in history. It is a historical novel, so it is history as well as being a good story. It's fiction, but most likely something like this did happen. I liked it partly because it tells what really happened in a very intriguing and interesting way. For anyone interested in aspects of Portuguese or Brazilian history as well as that of the Inquisition, this historical novel serves as a captivating introduction. I found it all the more fascinating for having been written by a young Brazilian student from an esteemed US college, NYU.
There were a few minor grammatical flaws through the book, quite forgivable considering English is not the author's native language, but should not have been missed by the editors.
